JOE BIDEN: Sets Record for Use of "Democracy" in Inaugural Address

Celebrating America Primetime Special

TeeRoy's 2 Cents:

  • The very thought and meaning of "democracy" has taken added meaning in light of the January 6th attack on the Capitol.
  • Biden has already set the bar high.
  • Analysts say Biden was responding to our country's current mood.

Joe Biden set a record on Wednesday with his inaugural address. The new president used the word "democracy" more times than any other inauguration speech in the history of the U.S. as he stood at the U.S. Capitol, where democracy was threatened just two weeks ago.

At the beginning of his speech, Biden said, "This is America's day. This is democracy's day."

He went on to add, "The will of the people has been heard, and the will of the people has been heeded. We have learned again that democracy is precious. Democracy is fragile. And at this hour, my friends, democracy has prevailed."

He went on to use the word 11 times during his speech, putting him against of Harry Truman, who uttered the word "democracy" nine time in his speech in 1949.Franklin D. Roosevelt also said "democracy" nine times during his inauguration in 1941, according to a CNBC analysis of speeches from the American Presidency Project. (CNBC)
