Netflix and Ava Duvernay Sued for interrogation Scene in "When They See Us"

Netflix and Ava Duvernay are being sued over the controversial Reid interrogation technique depicted in, “When They see Us.” The mini series shares the stories of five black men who were wrongly accused of assaulting and raping a jogger in New York’s Central Park. 13 years later the five boys, now men were exonerated after another man confessed.

The lawsuit focuses on a scene from the final episode where a member of the D.A’s office scrutinizes a NYC detective. The prosecution says to the NYC detective, “You squeezed statements out of them after 42 hours of questioning and coercing, without food, bathroom breaks, withholding parental supervision. The Reid Technique has been universally rejected.” The detective responds, “I don’t even know what the f*cking Reid Technique is, ok? I know what I was asked to do, and I did it.”

The lawsuit calls the line false and defamatory, saying the “coercive interrogation tactics” depicted in the episode are not “synonymous” with its method. In the Reid technique, interrogation is an accusatory process, in which the investigator tells the suspect that the results of the investigation clearly indicate that they did commit the crime in question. According to Reid and its associates he technique isn’t supposed to be used on minors.

Neither Duvernay or Netflix have commented thus far...
